Before he began to take photography seriously as a career, Jim Alexander had his days "in the streets" of Paterson, NJ, as he often says -- drinking, smoking, and betting on one too many games at the pool hall where he was the manager. He lived in the rooming house upstairs. On a February Monday in 1964, he awoke and began to pour a glass of wine as he did to start his days. Then he heard a voice say, "Boy, you're killin' yourself." The glass remained empty. And Jim never took another sip.
"Resting Place (1966)" is a reflection of that moment. After moving from Paterson for a while, he returned in 1966 -- grateful and healthy -- and took a photograph of the same room that saved his life.
